• Question: I'm from Barbados and stumbled across your blog while being idle waiting for files to convert at work. It's always interesting to see a 'foreigner's' view of Barbados. Makes me laugh at the quirks & ridiculousness of some things, and the beauty of other things I take for granted. I've enjoyed reading so far. If you've got any questions about anything 'Barbadian' that you'd like a local's advice on feel free to msg me. I can't promise to be much help but I have lived here my whole life! - tiffanyjane

    Hey thanks for the message!

I’m loving Barbados, to me it’s a strange mix of a developing and developed world. I’m living in Rendezvous, and even in the suburb I can walk down one street and find quite nice houses and down another the houses are run down with broken down cars and chickens roaming the streets. But I still feel totally safe to wander about (unlike any similar area you’d find in Sydney).

Today when chatting to some of the Bajan students one of them said she hadn’t been to the beach in over a year, and 2 said they couldn’t even swim! How on earth do you live on an island that is only 25km long and not swim or go to the beach?

When chatting to another student about where she goes for holidays, she said she tends to go somewhere big like a major US city (trains were particularly exciting!). When she’s overseas and people take her to a beach she said it’s always disappointing, and I totally understand.
